Joan Osborne was awesome!

Although I really liked Taj Mahal, Joan Osborne stole the show. She came out and announced that she and her band were going to play the entire "Relish" album from beginning to end. That is one of my favorite albums of all time, and she sang it wonderfully well. Her band sounded great, and was well up to the task of re-creating (and improving upon) the album. After playing "Spider Web", Joan said that she had only sang the next tune once or twice in concert because she was kind of embarrassed by it, and then launched into a playful version of "Let's Just Get Naked". Afterward, she signed autographs for everyone who bought a copy of the CD.

Great concert at a mess of a venue.

You just can’t go wrong with a Taj Mahal show. Unfortunately, the evening was marred by a disorganized and uncomfortable venue. We arrived nearly two hours before the headliner came on and ordered a drink before we planned to order food. An hour and a half later our drinks still hadn’t arrived and no one bothered to take a food order. The server gave us a lame excuse so I canceled the drinks and got my own at the bar. We had a round table next to the sound mixing desk and the banquettes were crowded, narrow and uncomfortable for a long seating. This is my chief complaint about the Canyon and it’s sister club, The Rose in Pasadena. They really try to cram too many seats at each table which makes the seating rather tight and uncomfortable. The Canyon was severely understaffed that evening. The show was superb. Both the opener and Taj with his longtime backup Phantom Blues Band. The sound system and mixing were generally very good but the vocal mix was muddy and rather unitelligable but I give it some benefit of the doubt owing to Taj’s aging, gravelly voice. I hope the Canyon get get it’s act together to provide a more enjoyable experience befitting the quality of the acts that play there.
